Series- Knotted Roots Book # 1
By-Ruthi Kight
Genre-  YA Romance

Partying with friends and scoring a flawless tan is about all Roxie has on her list of things to make her Hampton's summer perfect.

Her parents, however, have other plans and Grandma Betty's farm is just one of them.

Just as her life is in shambles and the quaint town is suffocating her, she meets Chase.

Somewhere in the mix of bummer summer and small town doldrums, he becomes the boy she can't seem to avoid falling for. Just adding him to the picture, her stay starts to get better, even if she knows it has to end with the summer holidays.

That is until Betty drops a life-shattering bomb.

Roxie must make a choice that will change her life forever. What happens when a spoiled brat from New York learns the true meaning of love, loss, and forgiveness?

Can Chase and Roxie find a way to be together or is this just another summer romance?

“I like your jammies. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen so many colors throw up on someone’s clothes.” I looked up at him, prepared to voice my outrage, but his smile disarmed me once again. He was taunting me, trying to get a rise out of me and damn if he hadn’t come close to succeeding. I wouldn’t let him win.
“Thank you. I like your outfit as well. I have to say, Redneck Chic suits you quite well,” I replied, my sugary-sweet smile still firmly in place.
“Ya haven’t heard? It’s the latest trend. I can help ya catch up, if ya want?”
Caught off guard, I laughed out loud, covering my mouth quickly, trying hard to suppress the snort that I was sure was about to escape. His own masculine laughter joined with mine, mingling and building, until both of us were clutching our sides. I hadn’t had a good laugh in...well, forever. I heard the doors to the kitchen swing open again and glanced up as Grandma entered the room. She looked between us, her eyes searching for what had caused our raucous laughter.
“I always miss the funny. Wanna fill me in?” she asked as she pulled a package of fresh sausage out of the fridge and slapped it on the counter.
“It seems that our dear Chase here is a fashion guru. He has offered to help me learn the ins and outs of his style,” I replied as I looked over at Grandma. She scowled at me, but I continued anyway. “It seems that my style isn’t to his liking.”
“Oh, I wouldn’t say that. I really do like those pants. But I’m afraid you’re gonna have a hard time blending in around here if you continue to wear them,” he teased, laughing as he took in Grandma’s bewildered face.
“Now who said I wanted to blend in?” I teased back, earning another scolding look from Grandma.

Review by Missy

It was the beginning of Roxie's Summer vacation at the end of her Junior year of high school. Her biggest problem at that point was what boy was she going to be seeing this summer while she was in the Hamptons, or which designers clothing she would be wearing. That is until her parents told her that they were sending her to spend the summer with her grandmother in Perry Point South Carolina which wasn't far from Myrtle Beach but she considered it podunk SC and she didn't want to go. She felt her social life would be ruined and she thought if Amber asked her parents then maybe they would change their minds and let her stay with Ambers family for the summer. As they walked up to her apartment she heard loud yelling and them smashing glass so she went in quickly to see what was going on. Her parents had been arguing and her mom was sitting there crying, there was pieces of a broken vase all over the floor. She asked what was going on and her dad told her to ask her mother. At that point Amber told her she would talk to her later and she left and then her mother told her father to go ahead and smear her some more. Roxie's Dad looked at her and told her he wanted to wait until after summer to tell her but it wasn't possible at that point, & then he told her that they were going to be getting a divorce. Roxie was devastated and felt like she had been sucked punched. She was confused, bitter and angry over everything that was going on but  she packed and flew to South Carolina. She wondered if her grandmother would even remember who she was since she hadn't seen her since she was a year old. Once her plane landed she found her grandmother and there was a distance between them. They drove back to her grandmother's farm and she was shown to her room and she started unpacking then they went to dinner at a small diner in town. While there Roxie had stuck her nose up and made a couple comments about someone that was there and grandma told her the person she made the comments about was the doctor in town. Roxie had been born in New York City and grew up in a penthouse apartment. She had all the latest toys and most fashionable clothing and went to all the best places But she didn't have the best friends and the love and companionship, the dirt to play in. She was a spoiled, self centered brat that needed to grow up and she was about to learn to grow up and do it quickly. She then met 2 brothers that worked on her grandmothers farm named Chase and Brian. She was immediately attracted to Chase and felt like a fool because she became tongue tied and couldn't say anything and just sat there when he said hello to her.   She then met Katy and thought she was a country bumpkin but at that point she needed some friends and some fun so she became friends with her.  One day grandma was in a bad mood & when she asked why grandma told her that one of the volunteers had to quit working on the farm and that she couldn't afford to hire anyone else. Roxie decided she wanted to get closer to Chase so she told her grandmother she would help out on the farm as much as she could. The next morning she was up bright & early and went to the barn, when she got there grandma told her that Chase would show her what needed to be done. By the end of the day she was exhausted & worn out but she said she would help & she was determined to do it. Over time her and Chase built a relationship but then things would happen and she would run. She had never learned to allow someone to be there for a real relationship and he was moving much faster than she thought was possible. When her grandmother came downstairs one morning she didn't look well and she stumbled, when she asked if she was ok her grandmother told her she was but she didn't believe her. She kept asking and finally it came out that her grandmother had cancer and she had had it for about 5 months. When Roxie talked to her mother about her grandmother, she found out her mother knew about the cancer and she was angry that her mother and grandmother knew  about it but never told her. She felt deceived & left out like she didn't belong. Chase helped her deal with her feelings and she came to terms with them. While coming to terms with her feelings she also came to terms with the fact that she had been a real brat with the way she had treated her grandmother all summer. She decided she didn't want to move back to NYC, she wanted to stay in SC and be with her grandmother and her friends and on the farm. She had found home and found her roots there and felt that is where she needed to be. She had her parents come to the farm so they could all sit and discuss everything that had happened and what would happen with her grandmother. Her parents were not all keen on her staying there but in the end she did stay. She had helped her grandmother on the farm while she went to school for her senior year and her biggest hope was that her grandmother could see her walk the stage to get her diploma.

The southern summer was back with a vengeance.

What she didn’t expect was to find him.

Brian spent his life in his brother’s shadow, constantly falling short of others’ expectations.

When he gets the chance to prove himself, he's forced to decide if there’s more to him than just the mistakes he’s made.

The summer was supposed to be easy.

It was supposed to be fun.

But sometimes, when you least expect it...you fall.

Review by Ashley

I loved this Novella and was unable to put it down.  While I would love to hear more about Brian and Katy it didn't leave off as a cliff hanger just left you wanting more.  A lot of detail and funny details were put into this story and it had me both laughing and crying.  In 70 short pages I fell in love with all the characters in the book.  Ruthi has written a novella that was short, sweet, to the point and well just plain AMAZING!!!  Congratulation on a Great book!

5 stars
