Captured Lies...

Title:  Captured Lies
Author:  Maggie Thom
Publication Date:  October 17th

She was kidnapped not once but twice and now someone wants her dead because of it...Her life was a lie!

Bailey knew her upbringing wasn't normal but she's worked hard to stabilize her life.  At 29, she finally has a good business, a stable home; her life is miles from that of her childhood.  Then suddenly her mother dies, leaving a gaping hole and a discovery that they may not even be related.  If Guy, the private investigator is to be believed, her life is a lie.  Using the skills she learned on the streets, Bailey travels back through a sketchy and dangerous past, to find answers.  Dodging bullets, staying ahead of those who want her dead and convincing Guy she can do it alone, are making it difficult to discover not only the secrets of her mother's past but that of a family claiming she is theirs.

Everyone seems to have a story...but who's telling the truth?  And who wants her dead?  Is Guy part of the solution?  Or part of the problem?  To discover the facts, she'll have to untangle a web of deceit, lies and secrets, dating back over thirty years.

Turning, she faced him. “Yeah. Like where we lived. I learned to connect where we were at, to a date. It gave me something to do. It kept me from thinking about what was going on in my life.” She twisted her hands together. “Every time we moved. Every time we screwed someone over. Every time we did something that made my stomach feel like it was full of battery acid, I can tell you the date. Ask me to remember when something good happened and I… don’t know. Sad eh?”

“It had to be tough being on the go all the time.” Guy restrained himself from reaching out to touch her, knowing she needed to keep talking and any sympathy on his part would shut her up.

“You have no idea. But at some point it became an expectation. You never really unpack. Never get too excited. Too attached. Because it will all change.” She knocked her knuckles together. “Okay, enough about me. Tell me something about you. Did you move around a lot?”

He couldn’t look away from her questioning gaze. He shifted several times in his seat.

“Ants in the pants? Guess I hit a nerve. Easy to talk about me but don’t share with the pathetic life story of the girl if you can’t beat it. Hhmm?”

“No, I probably can’t beat your story but mine’s not so pretty either. Let’s just say I was the result of a bad situation.”

He ignored her arched eyebrow for a moment before giving in. “My mother was a maid for a wealthy family, she was said to have been raped. It was hushed up. She was given the boot. Until I was nine I lived with my mother and grandmother. Then my mom was killed in a car accident. My grandmother was a bit nuts and devious. She was blackmailing the rich family, telling lies and slandering them. She wanted money. My step grandmother, who had become the head of the mansion, basically bought me. She paid the old woman and next thing I knew was that I got to grow up in a beautiful old monstrosity of a house, where I was treated like gold.”

“So your real grandmother didn’t want you and figured you were a good way to get rich? How long did you live with her?”

“A few days.”

“Your step grandmother put up money right away for you, even though you weren’t related?”

“Uh. No.”

“Okay, I’m confused.”

He met her compelling gaze. He’d never told anyone about his upbringing before. “The day after my mom died, my real grandmother put me in the foster care system. It took my step grandmother over a year to find me and to stop the old bat from screwing with my life.”

CHARACTER BIOS:

Bailey is twenty nine and feels like she's just getting her life on track.  She has her own Interior Decorating business and she has lived in the same place for five years, a record for her.  Her life has been anything but typical.  She was raised by a single mom and moved frequently - sometimes during the day and sometimes at night.  They lived in the seediest places and sometimes on the street.  She never really had any friends, well at least not past grade two or three when they had managed to stay one place for long enough for her to make a friend.  But then they moved suddenly and she never got to see her friend again.  She learned to be self-reliant and to look after herself.  So when she's told her life is a lie, she plans on getting answers...on her own.

Guy has gone into business with a partner and started Knight's Associates, which is a private investigative business, mostly solving cyber crimes.  He was trained to be a police officer and lasted a little over a year but soon realized he wasn't cut out for it.  He was raised by his step-grandmother who saved him from a life of foster homes at the age of nine after his mom died and his real grandmother decided to create a scandal and use him as a means for blackmail.  Guy knows how lucky he has been to have been taken in not only by such a wonderful woman but a wealthy one.  He never wanted for anything but he also never took advantage of it either.  So when she asks him to find her granddaughter who had been kidnapped as a baby, he can't say no.

Maggie Thom took the challenge and leapt off, leaving a full time twenty year career in management, to write full time. After her initial panic that she might need a straight jacket, she published her first book Captured Lies, October 2012.  And now is excited to release her second novel, Tainted Waters, April, 2013.  Her third book, Deceitful Truths (sequel to Captured Lies) available fall of 2013.  An avid reader and writer her whole life, she decided to break the monotony of wishing to be an author by making it happen.  Married to her best friend, she is learning that humor, love and patience help her navigate her way through her twins' teen years.  Her motto:  Escape to read and Read to escape.
