Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Pride & Persuasion:

Elliott James is a control freak. After being told she was nothing special by her ex, Baker Williams, she’s spent the last eight years proving him wrong. She’s built a life she loves— prominent attorney, partner at her firm, a luxurious penthouse, and the best friends a girl could ask for. After a harrowing encounter last year, she’s determined to get her life back on track. She’s succeeding, until a case brings her face to face with the one man that’s ever made her want to lose control.

Baker Williams started with nothing but determination to make a better life for himself. He’s built an empire he’s proud of, by acquiring companies and working his way up. So when a rogue employee threatens to bring his kingdom tumbling down, he hires the best to defend his case. His only fault is not realizing that the best is Elliott James, and she’s ready to remind him of all the damage he did years ago.

Eight years ago, Elliott and Baker were matches and gasoline. Explosive and hot. Back then, they both walked away burned. When they’re forced to work together long after the flames have died down, they discover they’re just as combustible as ever. Now, they have to figure out how to save each other without their spark burning down everything they’ve worked so hard for in the process.

I fling the door open, hitting the lights as I go, and stop short.

In my office, standing in front of my desk, is the sexiest back I have ever seen. I mean, there’s a man attached to it, but I’m mostly preoccupied by the muscles rippling across his shoulders as he reaches for the shirt on the chair next to him and hurriedly puts it on.

“What the hell?” I set my briefcase and purse down with my coffee on the side table. “Can I help you?”

“I’m sorry, I spilled coffee on my shirt and the bathroom was locked,” he says, turning to face me. “The door was open and—”

He pauses when he sees me, and my mouth goes dry. My heart begins to race, and I grab the door frame to steady myself. Baker Williams is standing right in front of me, dress shirt still hanging open, hand frozen on his shirt cuff. For a second, everything is right in the world. I want to run to him, jump in his arms just like I used to. A thousand memories run through my mind before I’m brought out of my haze by his sharp intake of breath.

“Elliott.” He says my name like a curse.

“Baker.” And just like that, the hate is back. The rage I feel at seeing him makes me want to run to him now for an entirely different reason.

“What are you…”

He trails off and I stand firm. I will not feel uncomfortable in my own damn office, at the firm where I’m a partner. “This is my office,” I say blandly, begging my voice not to betray me.

“I see.” He’s recovered, not looking flustered in the least. He continues buttoning his shirt, taking his time.

I avert my gaze, refusing to allow myself to ogle him the way I want to.

Holy shit.

These eight years have done him well. He was an eighteen-year-old boy when I loved him. Standing before me is a grown man.

“Could you hurry up? I have a meeting to get to,” I say, void of emotion as I cross my arms over my chest. I will not let him think he’s getting to me.

“As do I.” He finishes buttoning his shirt and grabs his bags from the floor. His eyes come up to meet mine and realization hits.

You’re my eight o’ clock?” The words come out as a squeak and I curse myself.

“Apparently so.” I swear there’s a gleam in his eye and I want to choke him. “This is going to be interesting.”
