The Beautiful Review...

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she's forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city's glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group's leader, the enigmatic Sébastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of La Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sébastien's guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.

When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.

At once a sultry romance and a thrilling murder mystery, master storyteller Renée Ahdieh embarks on her most potent fantasy series yet: The Beautiful.

REVIEW!!!

I have yet to find a book by Renee Ahdieh that I didn't absolutely love.  This book was no exception and I can't wait for the second book to come out this year.

Celine is an amazingly realistic character who I fell in love with from the moment I met her.  She moves from Paris where she had a great job and family to a convent in New Orleans where she knows nobody.  She is looking for a fresh start in the aftermath of a major event in her life.  She wasn't looking for a man but she has two great choices in front of her and a demon chasing her as well.

Sebastien Saint Germain has lost every member of his family, except his immortal Uncle.  He is surrounded by his Uncle's immortal children.  He is well respected in town and most people give him a large berth like he's royalty.  The moment he sees Celine fresh off the boat so to speak he's intrigued.  They keep meeting in strange ways but they both know they can't be together.

Do Sebastien and Celine end up together?  Does the power of the supernatural catch up with both of them?  Does the war going on in the supernatural world about to start?

This book was beyond what I was expecting.  I bought it by chance because I loved the cover, didn't even see who wrote it until I got it.  I pick books based on their covers usually or author if it's one that I've fallen in love with, this one just happened to be a cover choice.  Again, I wasn't let down.  I absolutely love the way this author wields words and creates a world you don't want to leave.  I was enthralled.  But there were some things that I'm still not entirely sure about in this book but I hope that it's all cleared up in the next book.

5 fantastical stars!

“What about this one?” Lars dangles the tiniest bikini he has found in the shop on his finger. It’s more a fingernail than a piece of clothing.

“Perfect, let me try it on first and walk around the shop to be sure everyone appreciates it.”

“No way, woman,” he grunts. “I want you to wear it inside.”

“Why would I wear this inside when I could be naked riding your cock?” I quirk an eyebrow.

“Because suggestive clothing is a veil to desire. I prefer to have a peek behind the curtain than being invited to a show with the curtain wide open,” he shrugs.

“I know. And that’s because you’re a man of the shadows, babe. Buy it if it rocks your world. I’ll wear it for you tonight. But for the beach, I need something covering a lot more.” I continue my search through the rack until I find a cute black bikini. I turn around to show Lars and find him scrutinizing me.

“What?”

“I need to try on my bathing suit,” he says, zooming in on my breasts.

“So stop looking at my tits and go?” I point at the changing room. The shop is the typical surfer shop full of clothes and bracelets made from recycled plastic you find in the ocean. It’s tiny and has a hippie beach vibe to it no one can resist. It even smells like monoi and coconut.

“I can’t.” He smiles. I can see the glimmer in his eyes that it’s nothing serious. Probably, one of his stupid ideas like how he decided he always needs a couple of beers or he will get an earache. To this day, he still believes that if he has only one, his ear will not hurt.

“Why?” I roll my eyes not even waiting for his answer before knowing it’s stupid.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to try on a bathing suit with a hard-on,” he whispers.

“Because you can catch HDD?” I smile.

“HDD?”

“I read it somewhere Lars. If you try on bathing suits with an erection, you might get Hard Dick Disease, and Mr. Selfish will stay in that state for your girlfriend to ride you whenever and wherever she wants. It’s scientifically proven.” I laugh at my own joke. Lars smirks.

“You’re a dork.”

Love the One You Hate...

R.S. Grey’s new standalone romance, Love the One You Hate is out now! Check it out and grab your copy today!

About Love the One You Hate (OUT NOW!)

Nicholas Hunt is the man I hate.

For good reason.

His opinion of me is tainted by prejudice even before my arrival at his grandmother’s estate, and my first impression of him is just as abysmal.

His arrogance and icy demeanor make it clear that he’s the type of man who’s best handled at a distance.

Fortunately, space shouldn’t be an issue inside this Gilded Age mansion and its lush gardens. If I stick with the servants and he keeps to his sailboat and vintage Porsche, we should hardly cross paths at all. Unfortunately, at Rosethorn, I find that all roads eventually lead to Nicholas Hunt.

Sparks fly as we spar at the dinner table. Fighting words are flung in the shadows of the palatial halls.

We hang suspended in our hatred of one another, painfully oblivious to the heat and tension that build with every moment we’re left alone. We’re liable to kill one another, I think…right up until my eyes land on his lips and a new feeling grips hold of me: lust.

What’s worse?

He knows it.

They say you should keep your enemies close, but when Nicholas tightens his grip on my waist and draws me near, I’m not sure if it’s out of loathing or love.

One thing’s for sure—I intend to find out.

“Kissing me out in the open on Main Street? Do you know what that means?”

He stepped closer, heat coming off him in delicious waves that surrounded her in a fiery blanket of desire. “What does it mean?” His voice dipped to a sultry whisper that had her desperate to throw her inhibitions to the curb.

“Next thing you know, the whole town is planning our relationship down to the wedding day and how many kids we’ll have. Probably twins. A boy and a girl.”

“Kids?”

Olivia snickered at the squeak in his voice. “Don’t worry. You won’t impregnate me by kissing me.”

“But the town will think you’re carrying twins.”

“You’re learning.” She tapped his chest, and an electric current jolted through her veins. Shane wrapped his hand around her wrist and yanked her into the alley between Pie in the Sky and Book Nook. He backed her into the wall, strong male consuming her. His arms caged her in, and she arched toward him, desperate for his touch.

In one fell swoop, he captured her lips, and lava exploded in her chest and dispersed in heated waves. His mouth moved against hers with a carnal lust so passionate and demanding, she lost sight of everything else. All she could focus on was the hard press of Shane’s lips and the hard bulge in his pants meeting the apex of her thighs.

A moan escaped her throat as his hands cupped her face and tilted her head. His tongue swiped lovingly at the crease between her lips, and she parted, welcoming the slick feel. It was a sensual dance of tongue and teeth, licking and nipping, giving and taking. He tasted of sweet coconut and confidence, kissing her with a potency she would never forget.

The way he kissed her, ravenous and precise, it was as if he’d been doing it for years. She melted in to his lips, letting him take control, and not because she felt he needed to dominate, but because she wanted him to.

His body pressed into her, her back melding to the cool brick wall. It was fire and ice, heaven and hell, and she didn’t want it to end. She grabbed his t-shirt, holding him close, absorbing every sensation flooding her body.

He kissed a trail from the corner of her mouth down her neck and back. The stubble on his face left tracks of passion. She didn’t care. Tonight, when she was in her bed, all she would be thinking about was this kiss.

A giggle broke the cloud that surrounded them. “Don’t mind me. Continue just as you were.” Olivia didn’t need to turn to know whose voice that was—Jean Kelly, owner of Book Nook.

Olivia dropped her head to Shane’s shoulder, embarrassed heat prickling her neck and cheeks. Shane held her, and Olivia felt his arm raise in a wave.

“Have a good day, you love birds,” Jean said, and Olivia covered her face with her hands.

“Is she gone?” Olivia asked a few seconds later.

“She’s gone.” Shane’s warm breath caressed her ear. “So… what do you want to name our twins?”

~~~***~~~***~~~
REVIEW!!!!
This is the conclusion to the Illuminae Files Trilogy.  While book one follows Kady and Ezra and book two follows Hanna, Nik and Ella as they fight to survive their separate attacks; book three follows all of these characters and those still on Kerenza IV.  This means this book got a little confusing with all the different people involved.
I enjoyed learning about how things end for all these characters.  I truly enjoyed the journey these characters and authors have taken me on.  This series is unlike most books I've read as it is written in pictures and dossiers and transcriptions and chat logs.  They are large books but don't usually take a long time to read.  I did struggle through this one but only because I started it in the middle of a major reading rut.  Once I finally picked it up halfway through I flew through the last half in a few hours.
I truly recommend this series.  Yes it is Science Fiction which isn't usually my thing but every once in a while I come across that random SciFi series I truly love.  This was one of them.  I loved both authors styles and they worked well together.  I will definitely be looking up more books by both of them soon.
4.5 out of this world stars!!!
When Calls the Heart Review...
Nothing in her cultured East Coast upbringing prepared Elizabeth for a teaching position on the Canadian frontier. Yet, despite the constant hardships, she loves the children in her care. Determined to do the best job she can and fighting to survive the harsh land, Elizabeth is surprised to find her heart softening towards a certain member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Book 1 of the bestselling Canadian West series.
~~~***~~~***~~~ REVIEW ~~~***~~~***~~~

I went into this book thinking it would match up with the show like the Love Comes Softly saga did.  I was kind of let down by this book.  I enjoyed the story but wasn't thrilled that it was so different from the show.

Elizabeth was raised in the upper class of the East Coast but when her older brother mentions a teaching position in Calgary.  She hasn't seen her brother in forever but thinking she would get a post in town with her brother she goes.  After meeting the man in charge of posting her at a school things go sideways.  She is posted to a school quite far from her brother.  Once in the town she is meant to teach in things seem to go swimmingly with just a few issues.  Can she survive the teaching year while following all the rules set in place?  Will she make friends with the people?  Will she find love?  Will she find family?

So I love Janette Oke's writing and after reading the entire Love Comes Softly series I decided to start in on this series.  The writing is well done and the story is great.  I look forward to reading the rest of the series.  I just wish I had read the books before watching the show so I didn't feel as let down by the book.  If you love period christian romance books I would definitely recommend Janette Oke's books.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Fatigue lines circled James Walkers eyes and forehead; dry canals of wrinkled flesh ran down the sides of his face. A flood of light washed over him, flickering ever so often. He found himself hissing at that inconvenience before resuming his examination. James spent months inspecting every piece of hardware and taking voice notes—he was ready to proceed.

“James Walker, Ph.D.,” he said into the recorder. “After meticulous examination that produced minor wins and fails, everything seems to be in order. The mechanism is responsive. I’m proceeding to the next step—implementation. Cooling systems have taken to the previous modifications, refer to doc-234. Internal examinations will continue intermittently.”

James clicked off the recorder and sighed. He walked across the room and paused inches from his destination, letting his eyes scan the table and its contents. The thin, silicone-based polymer suit reflected the soft light in the room. The project was close to completion and when he thought of what was at stake, the usual litany of questions and doubts arose. He scratched his stubble and pushed aside thoughts of consequence. He knew all too well that one wrong move might bring down his research like a flimsy deck of cards.

“Positivity doesn’t exist in the realm of fringe science, but you have to try,” he muttered under his breath. Those words fueled James, who focused on the most favorable outcome.

The augmented bio-hybrid suit had muscles, tendons, and ligaments designed to replicate the human body—an exact replica. He rolled the table close to the gurney then proceeded to couple the parts together. It took thirty minutes of concentrated effort to get the body sheathed. James took a step back and admired his masterpiece. It reminded him of a Renaissance anatomical painting he once saw in a museum. A smile tugged at the corner of his lips, but he wiped it away with the back of his hand. He attached a transfusion tube to the small glass cylinder filled with dense liquid. He injected the mixture into the body’s cervical vertebrae. Spider-like microscopic nanocells hurried down the spine and spread into the hybrid suit. The muscle tissues expanded and solidified over the impenetrable frame underneath.

James watched the process unfold. His heart beat in double time, eager to move to the next phase. The pulsating vibe in his ears synced with his anxiety. He ambled to a wall lined with metal cabinets and retrieved the synthetic skin from its compartment. At the table, he arranged them over the entire body like a giant jigsaw puzzle. He watched the panels of skin adhere to one another. His hands imprisoned within his pockets to resist the urge to touch. Soon, skin covered the mechanical suit and a man lay in its place. The transformation was a success.

Exhausted, James glanced at his watch and wondered if he should call it a night or continue to the next phase. Logic advised against that course of action, but the restless inventor needed to proceed. A tremor ran through his hand, a reminder of the imminent situation he was in. Time was no longer a commodity he could afford.

He shook off the reverie and began the final phase. He flipped a switch and waited.

James didn’t expect movement, so when the eyes fluttered, he was startled. Rapid eye movement meant the system transmitted the packets of data through a private server James created, which allowed limited access to a vast global network.

“William? Can you hear me?” James whispered. He moved closer to the table and repeated the question. The eyes continued to flutter for a moment, then flew open. Gracefully, the body sat up and surveyed the room. It—he—was trying to assess its surroundings.

“How do you feel?” James asked tentatively.

“William? Is that my name?” His deep voice resonated throughout the room. His eyes stopped on the bespectacled man in a dark green, cable knit sweater, who stood next to the table. He looked to be in his fifties with tired blue eyes and short, graying, brown hair.

“Yes. Your name is William. And my name is James. I am your creator.”

The AI tilted his head to the side. His dark brown eyes rose to meet James’. “You’re ill. You ha—”

“I-I know,” James interrupted. “Do you know what you are?”

Will held up his hands and flexed the digits. “Am I awake, or am I programmed to feel awake?”

James smiled and sat in a chair near the wall. Excitement welled up inside him. “The fact you even ask that question gives me hope that you are exactly what you’re meant to be.”

“I’m not human,” Will stated.

“No, you’re far more advanced. I was able to correlate specific patterns of the central nervous system with emotions and thought processes to create something beyond a program—an organism. You are the first AI ever to have this organism installed.”

They held each other’s gaze for a moment before James broke contact and continued.

“This evolutionary system will gradually alter and determine your choices based on the human interaction you experience throughout your life, much like a regular person. Over time—I’m not sure how long—but over time, you will start to engage in a more human-like behavior. You will continue to write code as a sentient being.”

Will canted his head and blinked rapidly. “I’ll be able to freely write my own code?”

“To a degree. There are restrictions, uh, goal-oriented programs. More specifically, there is a source code which will prevent you from accessing data that can alter or corrupt your program. Once certain milestones are crossed, you will have the ability to act upon your own thoughts and emotions.” James looked at Will and let out a deep sigh. The expunged breath formed a visible cloud over his face before it dissipated. “For the time being, I need you to remain here in the lab until I’m certain your program is fully functional and is safe enough.”

“Safe enough for what?” William asked.

James didn’t answer.

EXCERPT:

“I’m sorry. I thought this was my bathroom, not a shared bathroom.” I stop to take in what she’s wearing—a black, baby-doll negligée—and feel my cock rise.
She bends over to rinse her mouth, and I have all sorts of dangerous thoughts, but she says, “I’m done. I’ll get out of your way.”
As she rushes past me, I reach for her. “You’re never in my way.”
She smiles and steps aside. I can see she’s upset about something. I could ignore it and go to bed, but instead, I quickly brush my teeth and knock on the door she exited through.
“Corrine? Is everything okay?”
She sits up in her bed as I open the door and strains to smile. “Yes, I’m fine.”
I know women well enough to know that’s not what fine looks like.
“Are you sure?” I ask.
She nods. “Sorry if I was too forward earlier. It won’t happen again.”
“Wait. What?” My heart beats triple time. “You were not being too forward earlier. It was perfect. I only stepped back because if I didn’t, I would have bent you over the hood of the car and fucked you until you screamed my name. I have too much respect for you to do that with an audience.”
She turns scarlet, including her chest, and I wonder what her breasts would feel like if I played with them.
“Oh.”
I walk over, open the covers, and crawl in to lie next to her. “You can tell me to leave at any time.”
Her breathing hitches, and I kiss her. It’s soft and delicate, but I can only hold myself back for so long. Our kiss becomes sensuous. I want her to know the depth of my desire for her. Our tongues do an aggressive dance. I pull her on top of me, and she straddles me with her wetness rubbing against my hard cock. God, she feels so good.
I reach for her breast beneath the lace, and it’s soft and pliable—so much better than the hard rocks of so many of the women I date. I roll her nipple between my finger and thumb and pull.
Corrine breaks our kiss, throws her head back, and moans as her hips move back and forth.
I don’t think I can get any harder. I want Corrine Woods. I want her on me, under me, and in front of me.

What are two besties willing to risk for something more? The New York Times bestselling author of This Is Love has the answer in this fun, sexy, and emotional romance about friendship, family, and giving love a chance.

Something is off in Piper Dalton’s life, and she has a feeling it might just be her. All her siblings are blissfully settled with their forever loves. But while her sisters were dreaming of white weddings, Piper was left heartbroken and commitment phobic by her first love, her best friend’s younger brother. As things heat up between Piper and Harley, she warns him not to fall in love with her because she’ll only break his heart. Harley is the right man for that challenge—until he makes the biggest mistake of his life, and they begin to wonder if true love really can conquer all.

EXCERPT:

Harley set his eyes on Piper again as she ascended the porch steps, sending sparks searing beneath her skin. Her arms were full of groceries, and his arms were open wide, as if greeting her in this fashion were totally normal. She had to think fast because she did not trust herself right now. Not after thinking about him in all sorts of compromising positions all day.
Don’t even think about it, Dutch,” she said as sternly as she could, thankful for the paper grocery bags. At least she had a buffer between them.
Oh, I’m definitely thinking about it.” He stepped in front of her and wrapped his arms around her, his frustratingly handsome face peering down at her from above the groceries.
If he kept looking at her like that, the paper bags were liable to catch fire.
How was your day, Pipe? Still thinking about me?”
No. Definitely not. In fact, I thought about everything else but you.”
You suck at lying. We could put those sucking skills to much better use.”
